We talked to PrettyLitter subscriber Kathy K. about Elphaba and here’s what she had to say:

Elphaba was a Katrina rescue in a camp run by Alley Cat Allies. She was K88 in the camp, the 88th rescue brought in.

When I arrived at the camp, she was there. One of my “jobs” was to clean the cages and add food and fresh water every day. Elphaba would nip at my fingers when I reached in. She was shy at first. I don’t know her background and, sadly, her owner was never found.

I had never seen a beautiful tortie like her and fell in love. I am told tortie’s can have an attitude, haha! Elphie let me know what was okay and not okay, but she is a sweet soul.

When it was time to close the camp, we needed to find homes for the remaining cats. I knew Elphie was coming home with me.  The best guess from the vet was that she was about a year old. She’s been with me since 2005 so she is about 17 now.

I had Elphie for about 3 months when I returned to New Orleans to help Alley Cat Allies again. Elphie stayed with a friend and suddenly disappeared one day. She had gotten into the eaves of the house and wouldn’t come out until my friend put me on speaker and I called Elphie. I was amazed she knew my voice already!

Elphaba made herself at home with my other cats. She loved to sleep next to them and groom them. Sadly, they all passed and she is now a solo cat. I got a kitten to keep her company and she won’t have anything to do with him. She is the queen!

Elphaba loves the outdoors and goes to the garden with me in nice weather. She stays inside in the winter. I think she must have been an indoor/outdoor cat because when the weather was nice the first year she was with me, she scratched through the screen to get out. I have sturdier screens now. Lol. She likes to chase bugs, crickets and hunt mice. Although she’s slowing down a bit and sleeps more, she still runs through the house like a nut and chases any cat that comes into the yard or driveway. In her younger days, she used to come home followed by one of the neighborhood toms even though she’s spayed. Now she chases them away. I had a cat that lived to be 22. I hope Elphaba sticks around that long.

Elphaba’s Favorite Pastimes:

Elphaba loves to sleep in the sun and play with her catnip toys. She likes to run through the house in the morning.

Most Mischievous Behavior:

Elphaba likes to climb on my lap and stand in the way when I’m working. She also runs in front of me and then stops fast, almost tripping me up.

If your cat could have one thing unlimited for the rest of time, what would it be?

Sunshine!

Thank you for sharing your story, Kathy and Elphaba!
